UK co-development studio claims major performance wins for clients, and seeks senior engineering talent
UK co-development house CodeDev, also known as The Unreal Guys, has launched a specialist optimization division called The Performance Guys, dedicated to handling project-critical optimization work. Comprising solely engineers and technical artists, the division is actively recruiting senior engineers.
The Performance Guys was officially introduced last month, following prior involvements in projects like Hangar 13's Mafia: The Old Country, work for Epic Games, Otherside Entertainment, and an undisclosed AAA title. The company stated that its specialized optimization efforts led to significant memory usage reductions, with up to a 50% decrease achieved through a substantial cross-console overhaul to meet stringent platform requirements.
CEO Myke Parrott emphasized the need for specific technical expertise to fully leverage Unreal Engine's capabilities and ensure seamless game performance, a challenge often neglected until late in the development phase. This initiative was driven by repeated requests from partners seeking assistance in this area.
CodeDev has developed an internal tool named "Performance Intelligence" to provide more extensive data than Unreal Insights, without overwhelming users. The tool helps identify causes of usage spikes, such as local work depth or waiting on other tasks, and detects incorrect-thread executions, streamlining developers' troubleshooting processes.
The company's current focus is on optimizing performance for Unreal, Unity, and proprietary technologies in indie, AA, and AAA video games, as well as virtual productions and high-end visualizations.
