Sony Interactive Entertainment is cutting jobs at Destiny maker Bungie.
Redundancies are impacting most of the Destiny team, as well as some Marathon team members. In an internal email, published to the PlayStation firm's website, Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst said that a significant number of staff are affected by this news, including most of the Destiny team as well as some Marathon team members. Specifically, 292 staff are being let go, according to a WARN filing with Washington State's Employment Security Department. In addition to Bungie staff being let go, Hulst mentioned that some Sony Interactive Entertainment staff who supported the studio have also been made redundant. Hulst explained that the decision was made after extensive discussion and careful consideration to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.
Bungie had already announced the closure of development on Destiny 2, with Hulst praising the studio's work on the sci-fi shooter franchise as remarkable. He also stated that Marathon remains an important part of Sony's portfolio, and they will continue to support Bungie's work on the extraction shooter and future projects. In May, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported Bungie's plans for significant staff cuts. PlayStation acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022 but wrote down the purchase price by $765 million during its 2025/26 financial year, representing 21% of the deal's value.
