Sony has announced the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, starting with select markets such as Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua later this year, followed by a global shutdown in July 2027. This move will prevent new content purchases on these devices due to their inability to support modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards.

The decision was described as difficult by Sony, acknowledging the special place that PS3 and PS Vita hold in the hearts of players as they represent a significant era in PlayStation history. The PS3 was launched in the US in 2006 and Europe in 2007, while the PS Vita debuted in the US and Europe in 2012 and was discontinued in 2019.

Furthermore, Sony has revealed plans to stop producing physical discs for new PS console games starting from January 2028, hinting at the possibility of its next console lacking a disc drive. A recent report suggests that Xbox may also follow suit by eliminating the disc drive.
