Sony will stop producing physical discs for new games on PlayStation consoles starting January 2028. The decision is driven by changing consumer preferences towards digital formats.
Sony has announced that it will halt the production of physical discs for new games launching on PlayStation consoles from January 2028. This move is a response to the evolving trends in consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry landscape. The company emphasized that this shift from physical to digital formats aligns with the changing landscape of media consumption.
Starting in January 2028, new games will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and various retailers. However, titles released or set to launch on discs before this date will not be affected by the change. Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that this strategic transition reflects the growing consumer inclination towards digital media over physical discs.
According to reports from Game File, Sony observed that nearly 80% of full game purchases on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 during the past financial year were digital. The company expressed its commitment to enhancing innovation in how players access games and providing flexible options for purchasing new titles.
An industry analyst from Ampere Analysis, Piers Harding-Rolls, mentioned that Sony's decision to go all-digital will help mitigate margin pressures from various aspects such as development and staffing costs. The shift to digital distribution offers advantages like improved sales tracking and reduced commercial risks for publishers selling through retail channels.
