Staff at Ubisoft's Barcelona studio have initiated strikes in response to planned layoffs that could result in 51 workers losing their jobs. The strikes, organized by Spanish union La Confederación General del Trabajo, are scheduled to occur on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 30 to July 17. The employees are advocating for a binding negotiation to secure the jobs of the 51 staff members facing termination. They are also calling for job protection measures to prevent further mass layoffs at the studio for at least five years.
In addition to job security, the workers are requesting the fulfillment of previously agreed promotions that were unilaterally halted by the company. They are also seeking permission to work remotely for 60% of the month to enhance work-life balance. Furthermore, the staff is demanding a comprehensive review of the studio's salary enhancement scheme and social benefit packages.
The layoffs in Barcelona were announced alongside the shutdown of Ubisoft's Winnipeg and Belgrade studios earlier this year. Ubisoft intends to refocus the Barcelona studio exclusively on the Rainbow Six franchise. These actions follow a series of cost-cutting measures by Ubisoft, including a recent initiative to save €200 million through significant reductions.
