CTO Scott Van Vliet shared that an internal licensing service failure at Microsoft, utilized across various products, led to the disruption. The malfunction affected sign-in processes and entitlement checks, impacting activities like viewing the Full Library and launching owned games.
The outage also had repercussions on publishing and store partners relying on the same systems, causing disruptions in specific games. Van Vliet mentioned that after identifying the faulty infrastructure, the team redirected traffic to functional components while investigating the root cause. Service restoration varied across regions, resulting in some users regaining access before others.
