Xbox Reportedly Considering Dropping Disc Drives for New Feature

Xbox is reportedly considering dropping disc drives as it tests a new feature that lets players digitize physical games.

A new report suggests that Xbox may follow PlayStation in removing disc drives, with rumors indicating that Microsoft's next-generation console, Project Helix, could ship without this component. The feature being tested would allow players to convert their physical game collections into digital versions, ensuring playability on disc-less devices. While the discs will still function post-digitization, access to the digital copy may be restricted if the disc is shared or sold.

This initiative is expected to impact select Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games, excluding some older titles from the compatibility list. Both PlayStation and Xbox have embraced digital-only versions to cut costs, a trend also seen with Nintendo's Game-Key Cards for specific titles. Rockstar recently revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released as a download-only game starting this November.
