Kwalee Labs Shuts Down After Luna Abyss Launch

Kwalee Labs, developer of Luna Abyss, closes down just a month post-launch.

Kwalee Labs, previously Bonsai Collective, was shut down after releasing the well-received Luna Abyss game. Acquired by Kwalee in 2025, the studio faced closure, leading to the layoff of the entire nine-person team. Luna Abyss, a sci-fi shooter, garnered positive reviews upon its May 21st release across PC, PS5, Xbox, and Playstation platforms.

The closure announcement, made by CEO Hollie Emery on LinkedIn, cited circumstances beyond their control. Despite challenges, the team expressed pride in the game's launch and the support received from the industry and media. Following the shutdown, the team members are now seeking new opportunities in the industry.

Previously known as Bonsai Collective, the studio was established in 2019 as a remote setup under Emery's leadership. In 2021, the firm secured a $3.5 million investment from Super.com, later rebranded as Super Good Games. UK-based Kwalee, founded by David Darling of Codemasters, has released seven titles this year, with Rune Dice being the top-selling title.
