Obsidian is reportedly developing a new Fallout game after canceling several unannounced projects.
Obsidian is said to be working on a new Fallout title, with the project led by Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout: New Vegas. The studio has decided to cancel multiple undisclosed projects as part of a broader restructuring within Xbox, affecting around 60 to 70 employees at Obsidian. Despite the cancellations, a small team at the studio will continue working on a planned sequel to Avowed.
Additionally, the focus will be on creating DLC for The Outer Worlds 2 and content for Grounded 2. The main goal behind this strategic shift is to develop a new Fallout game under the direction of Josh Sawyer. Collaboration with Bethesda is expected for this project, although an Xbox spokesperson declined to provide any comments on this aspect.
Obsidian's previous work on Fallout: New Vegas, also overseen by Sawyer, has been recognized as the backdrop for the second season of Prime Video's adaptation of the franchise. Following the series' debut last December, Fallout game sales saw a significant boost, making it one of Prime Video's top-performing shows. The restructuring at Xbox has impacted several other studios, with layoffs confirmed at Id Software, Bethesda Game Studios, and ZeniMax Online Studios. Furthermore, studios like Activision, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios have also undergone staff reductions.
