Wizards of the Coast Ends Partnership with Giant Skull

Wizards of the Coast has ended its publishing agreement with Giant Skull, leading to the cancellation of an action-adventure game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

Wizards of the Coast has terminated its partnership with Giant Skull, resulting in the discontinuation of an action-adventure game based on Dungeons & Dragons. The decision came after Wizards of the Coast chose not to pursue a concept from Giant Skull, as reported by Bloomberg. Despite this, the company expressed respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and emphasized the value of their ongoing relationship. While the partnership has ended, Wizards of the Coast remains open to new project proposals from Giant Skull.

Giant Skull's founder, Asmussen, mentioned ongoing discussions with Hasbro and other firms regarding potential future publishing agreements. The company expressed optimism about its future, stating that 'Things are good at Giant Skull.' The partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull was initially announced in June. At that time, Asmussen outlined the goal of creating a new Dungeons & Dragons universe focused on immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and engaging traversal that players would embrace fully.

In 2024, Hasbro disclosed a $1 billion investment in internal game development to Gamesindustry.biz. Currently, Wizards of the Coast is collaborating with Archetype Studios on Exodus and with Invoke Studios on Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. The decision to end the partnership coincided with a broader reorganization at Wizards of the Coast, which involved the closure of its internal developer Atomic Arcade. Giant Skull, established in 2024, comprises veterans from Electronic Arts' Respawn studio. Asmussen, known for his role as game director in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, is a key figure at Giant Skull.
