Wizards of the Coast has written to its employees to explain how union representation works as the studio prepares for a unionization vote. Staff are set to vote on unionizing with the National Labor Relations Board on June 2.
Wizards of the Coast recently communicated with its staff regarding the potential unionization of employees. The company emphasized that the decision to unionize is personal but highlighted the importance of working together for a stronger future. The letter to staff, dated May 14, outlined that the benefits and perks currently enjoyed by employees could be subject to negotiation if the union is formed.
If employees opt for union representation, the Communication Workers of America (CWA) would act as the collective bargaining representative for the employees. This process typically involves negotiations on various aspects such as wages, benefits, and working conditions. The letter signed by John Hight, the current president of Wizards of the Coast, also mentioned the flexibility employees would have in direct workplace matters if they choose not to unionize.
Additionally, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro did not meet the deadline to recognize a union formed by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers. Other game development studios, including Double Fine Productions and several Microsoft subsidiaries, have also initiated the unionization process with support from the Communication Workers of America.
